Novice and expert designers are invited to participate in this not-so-ordinary human-centered design workshop with a focus on designing inclusive experiences. Workshop participants will be encouraged to bring their personal perspectives to embrace a growth mindset when applying design thinking to their daily lives and work.

During this hands-on event, you’ll get to work with small-group activities, ethnographic observation, synthesis and insights generation, and principles of inclusion to solve unique design challenges. Once you’re finished, you can expect to leave this workshop having designed experiences that matter for people living in and around the DC area.

This workshop is co-presented by designers from Capital One’s One Design organization and Drinks and light refreshments during the workshop.

Transportation / Helpful Directions:

General Assembly’s entrance is the door to the right of ChopHouse & Brewery. The closest metro stops are Gallery Place-Chinatown (under 2 minutes walking) and Metro Center. There are a few parking lots around, as well as street parking.


Dr. Jamika D. Burge

Conversational AI Learning Experiences at Capital One; Co-Founder of

Dr. Jamika D. Burge is part of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Design team that creates experiences for conversation and intelligent AI at Capital One. Before that, she was a tech consultant the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, supporting innovative tech programs that were funded at over $70 million. Jamika is also the co-founder of blackcomputeHER, an organization dedicated to supporting computational and design thinking capacity, as well as workforce development for black women and girls. She is an authority in human-centered design, inclusive research in tech, and the intersectionality of black women and girls in computing+tech. She has consulted for Google, the National Center for Women in Technology (NCWIT), and the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U). Jamika and her work have been featured in the New York Times and ComputerWorld, and has been recognized by HackBright Academy as a Top Tech Leader to Watch.

Mandy R. Drew

Artificial Intelligence/Human Experience Researcher at Capital One

Mandy R. Drew is an Artificial Intelligence/Human Experience Researcher at Capital One who specializes in using mixed-methods to understand how intelligent assistants can help people manage their finances and impact their lives. Mandy is a staunch advocate for research integrity and is passionate about designing experiments that produce accurate, repeatable, reliable insights leading to innovations in responsible AI, voice UI, and intelligent assistants. She is particularly interested in the disconnect between what people say and what they actually do.

Jamie Wlodinguer

Principal Artificial Intelligence/Human Experience Designer at Capital One

Jamie Wlodinguer works with the Artificial Intelligence (AI) design team at Capital One, where she helps develop the UX strategy behind the future of Capital One’s Conversational AI products. She believes that good design means as little design as possible, and often works to simplify complex problems by subtracting clutter and creating reusable patterns. Previously, she helped launch new product features that simplify the wedding planning process at WeddingWire and designed websites, apps, and digital products at Philadelphia design agency, O3 World. In 2012 she graduated with a BFA in Communication Design from Carnegie Mellon University.


Dr. Liwei Dai

UX Researcher, AI and Machine Learning at Capital One

Dr. Liwei Dai works with the Artificial Intelligence (AI) design team at Capital One, where she explores human stories and insights, and uses them to guide and inspire the future of AI in people’s lives. She also teaches Design Thinking to people from different backgrounds and in different roles, with a firm belief that everyone is creative and can become a design thinker. Previously, she led the Design Research team in Nielsen, and also worked in Xerox and IBM as a researcher. She has a Ph.D. in human-computer interaction. She lives in Oakton VA with her husband and two young boys.


Brooke Smith

Digital Designer at Capital One

Brooke Smith works with the Digital Messaging Team at Capital One, where she supports the Commercial Marketing team with building enterprise email communications. With her extensive background in programming, she brings her passion for technology and facilitation to the forefront of every connection. Previously teaching at Virginia Commonwealth University and Girls Who Code in partnership with Girls For A Change Nonprofit organization, she strongly believes in sharing her path into STEM with young adults and young girls. Brooke currently resides in Woodbridge, VA and enjoys exploring DC in her spare time.


Dane Robertson

Product Design Lead at Capital One

Dane Robertson works with the Commercial Card design team at Capital One, where he leads the design team responsible for card and expense management solutions for commercial customers. Prior to joining, he worked on high profile government projects including, the DOD/VA integrated Electronic Health Record, and Veteran Benefits Management System. All these projects also ended up on the Daily Show! Dane’s greatest accomplishment is that his mother was able to find affordable health insurance on an application he designed. He truly believes in teaching and showing the benefits of creative problem solving to those in the same underserved communities where he grew up. Dane resides in Centreville, VA with his wife and two boys.


Kristin Cooke

Principal Associate User Experience Designer at Capital One

Kristin Cooke is a two-time global award-winning designer from Silver Spring, Maryland. With a background in Graphic Design, Motion Effects + Animation, Photography, Video Production, Front-end Development, User Interface and Experience Design, she has led creative teams and projects across the nation. She has contributed to many Fortune 100 companies such as Capital One, TiVo, Under Armour, Discovery Communications, NFL Charities, numerous print publications, and is the founder of the non-profit HumanizeUs. Her focus now is running creative direction of user products by coaching and mentoring designers in visual design, and reigniting their love for visual artistry in design execution.


Tina Johnson-Marcel

Head of Design for Mainstreet Card at Capital One

Tina Johnson-Marcel is Head of Design for Mainstreet Card at Capital One. With more than 20 years of experience in the content space, Tina’s diverse professional background includes journalism, marketing, digital storytelling and social media. She is a graduate of Howard University.
