Description
How are designers using design thinking to inform modern map making? How can workflow integrations with tools like Figma, Framer, and After Effects modernize traditional mapmaking? Join us for a series of 5 to 10 minute lightning talks that will explore some of the challenges and design decisions behind building and designing location based experiences.
Attendees will hear about:
- Product and map design within larger design tools and systems like Figma and Framer from Amy Lee Walton of Mapbox and David Wicks of Solutions Architect and Mapbox
- Narrative storytelling with maps for emotion and context from Paul Franz of The Center for Strategic and International Studies
- Map design and data visualizations from Lauren Tierney of The Washington Post
- Engineering and map design from Dana Sulit and Alex Parlato of Mapbox
Light refreshments and drinks will be provided.

Amy Lee Walton
Principal Design, Mapbox
Amy Lee Walton creates diverse, transformative, and scalable products and experiences at Mapbox. Amy Lee thrives in cross-disciplinary environments working alongside groups of diverse thinkers and makers. Her work moves complexities into delightful, intuitive experiences that users love and rely on.
David Wicks
Solutions Architect, Mapbox
David Wicks is a wanderer, artist, and software developer. They hold a BA in Architecture from Miami University and an MFA in Design Media Arts from UCLA. David loves helping others achieve their creative goals, whether they’re making a silly app or a building-size kinetic sculpture.
Paul Franz
Director of Technology and Andreas C. Dracopoulos Chair in Creativity and Innovation
Paul Franz is the director of technology and leads innovation with CSIS’s internal product team, the Ideas Lab. He is responsible for the management of multi-disciplinary development and production teams who build user-facing digital products that merge interactivity and effortlessly understandable visual design.
He is a former contract video journalist with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting in Washington, D.C., and Time magazine in New York City. His work on education reform in Haiti earned awards from the Online News Association and the National Press Club. In 2017, his team won a Shorty Award for best data visualization.
Currently, he’s exploring the intersection of open-source geodata and motion design and leads production of CSIS’s High Resolution geospatial video series. He earned his master’s degree in multimedia journalism from the University of Miami in Florida in 2010
Lauren Tierney
Graphics Reporter and Cartographer, The Washington Post
Lauren Tierney is a Graphics Reporter and cartographer at the Washington Post who enjoys telling stories with maps and specializes in mapping environment, climate, wildlife, and adventure topics. Before joining the Post in 2017, she was a Graphics Editor at National Geographic Magazine, and has a masters degree in geography from the University of Oregon. She is a board member for the North American Cartographic Information Society, and is a past editor of the Atlas of Design.
Dana Sulit
Product Designer/Developer, Mapbox
Dana is a designer and developer at Mapbox, where she designs maps and builds map design tools to make cartography possible for all. She loves solving problems at all stages in the product lifestyle. Before Mapbox, Dana studied graphic design at Syracuse University.
Alex Parlato
Frontend Developer, Mapbox
Alex Parlato works as a frontend developer with the map design team at Mapbox to create tools that help users design custom maps to meet their needs. He has a background in art and design and recently moved back to the east coast from California.
